Why Critical Thinking Is the Most Important Skill in Your Life - Psychology Today: The Latest

  • Critical thinking keeps you alive by helping you avoid bad information that can harm your health.
  • It beats brilliance because breakthroughs and fortunes often come from questioning the obvious.
  • Your brain works against critical thinking; it’s wired to agree with others and protect your existing beliefs.
  • Critical thinking can be trained by checking original sources and getting comfortable with being wrong.

When a rat encounters unfamiliar food, it often lets another rat eat first. If nothing happens, the observer will join in later. If the taster gets sick or dies, that food is banned forever. Rats remember these lessons for days, which makes poisoning entire colonies difficult. This behavior, known as bait shyness, has been documented for decades.

Touching grass - Protesilaos Stavrou: Master feed with all updates

We underestimate the latent toxicity of information and of the thoughts it can engender. We know that we should be careful about what we eat, drink, and breath, but we forget that what we think also contributes to our wellness or lack thereof. The information we are exposed to creates a certain climate that skews our perception accordingly. The question, then, is whether this is a viable environment for us.

The other day I was reading through my RSS feeds to catch up on the news. I noticed an article with a title along the lines of “I want to be allowed to hate on fatherhood” (me paraphrasing). The author was a man about to tell us how much suffering is involved in being a father. I thought to myself that this is yet another one of those common performative gimmicks of the attention economy: the influencer must be ever-more outrageous and controversial in order to outcompete other influencers in the race for clicks.

430k-year-old well-preserved wooden tools are the oldest ever found - Hacker News: Front Page

https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=46782017

Tools predate homo sapiens (which emerged about 300 kYA) by millions of years. The first stone industry - Oldowan - is at least two million years old and might be as old as three million. They predate what we call “archaic humans” by a long time.

Even this evidence of woodworking is largely unremarkable. We’ve got phytolith [1] and microwear [2] studies showing unambiguous evidence of woodworking going back at least 1.5 million years. Wood tools just don’t survive very long, so this find is most notable for its preservation.
